Hello!

I'm Andy Smith, a counsellor and supervisor with NHS experience and Hartmoor's Practice Director.

My entire working life since leaving university has been in the service of people. After a year working in adult social care and then starting my experience in the NHS in 2015, I truly feel it is a privilege to be able to support people. I started work in an NHS counselling service in 2016 and my time there has shown me how vital mental health support is and how difficult it can be for people to access it.

I set up Hartmoor in 2023 as I wanted to create the opportunity to support more people than I could do from counselling in my NHS role or in private practice. I wanted to create a practice that brings together counsellors, psychotherapists and holistic therapists with people that they can support and do really good work together.

My Story

While training to become a counsellor, I gained experience working with the Local Authority supporting the care needs of older adults and people with physical disabilities. I also have also worked with the local GP Federation and within integrated care teams, supporting people with complex care needs as well as in business development as part of an Academic Health Science Network.

I have worked in an NHS youth counselling service since 2016. I initially started training working with young people in this service before becoming employed where, in addition to counselling, I worked to support other counsellors in their work placement. I helped train these counsellors into the service and also provided supervision before I resigned this part of the role at the end of 2022 to reduce my working hours.

My training integrates different approaches so that I can hopefully provide people with something that suits them. My belief is that the core foundation of counselling is an authentic relationship where we both feel safe and open. I hope that, over time, we might be able to get to know each other and I can support you however possible. Please do get in touch if you'd like to discuss how I might be able to support you, your child or someone that you know.

I'll look forward to hearing from you!
